Fr. Thomas Kottoor
It has been a year since the passing of Dr. M. K. Luka, former Assistant Professor of B.C.M. College, Kottayam. As a colleague and friend for more than a quarter of a century, my heart remains heavy—filled with both gratitude and grief—whenever I think of him. My tears of sorrow have slowly turned into tears of thanksgiving. His absence has become a thankful presence, for I continue to see his compassion reflected in countless lives he touched.
So many disadvantaged students became professionals, the homeless found homes, and children with disabilities discovered strength and confidence—all through the miraculous touch of Luka Sir. It was no magic, but a deeply human miracle born of empathy and conviction.
Though his own childhood and youth were filled with struggle and hardship, Luka Sir made it his mission to ensure that no child should endure such suffering. He excelled in his studies, and throughout his academic life stood as a courageous advocate for the poor, the homeless, the disabled, and the marginalized.
Later, while working tirelessly in the United States, he saved every hard-earned dollar to support others. His earnings were placed in a charitable trust aptly named “Helping Hands.” In partnership with the renowned magician Shri Muthucad, he initiated a visionary project in Kasaragod to uplift Endosulfan-affected children. For this noble cause, he even purchased 21 acres of land—a gift of hope for generations to come.
Luka Sir lived for others—without any distinction of caste, creed, or community. He lived simply, loved generously, and revered both nature and its Creator.
His enduring legacy can be summed up in one line: Dr. M. K. Luka lived not for himself, but for the difference he could make in the lives of others.
He left this world gently, soothing the hearts of all who knew him.
Alvida, Luka Sir… aap hamare dil mein hamesha rahenge
