FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: The colorful parade held on the second day of the 16th KCCNA Convention became a spectacular celebration of the heritage, culture, and unity of the Knanaya community in North America. Nineteen units from various cities across the United States and Canada marched with traditional attire, flags, banners, and great enthusiasm, transforming the Broward County Convention Center into a vibrant scene of celebration.
The parade began at 8:30 a.m., led by KCCNA President James Illickal, along with executive committee members and regional vice presidents. They were followed by the convention coordinators led by Convention Chairperson Joby Oorali, national office-bearers of various affiliated organizations, and former KCCNA presidents. Each participating unit then marched proudly, showcasing the identity of its city and the rich heritage of the Knanaya community.
The participating units were Miami, Atlanta, Calgary (KCAC), Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit-Windsor, Edmonton, Houston, Knanaya Jacobite, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Greater New York, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Antonio, North California (San Jose), Washington-Baltimore, and Tampa, along with the other participating unit listed among the 19 contingents.
The parade reflected the rural traditions of Kerala and the distinctive cultural identity of the Knanaya community. Accompanied by chenda melam and other traditional musical instruments, participants appeared in traditional attire including kasavu garments, mundu, and set sarees, captivating the audience. Knanaya flags, unit banners, and traditional symbols added grandeur and color to the procession.
One of the highlights of the parade was the enthusiastic participation of people from all age groups, from children to senior members. Each unit beautifully showcased its artistic traditions, community spirit, and discipline. Hundreds of people gathered at the convention venue and welcomed each contingent with enthusiastic applause.
The parade conveyed a powerful message: “Though we live in North America, we will never forget our roots.” It stood as a strong expression of the Knanaya community’s commitment to preserving its heritage and culture and passing them on to future generations.
