Sr. Dr. Mary Marcellius a staunch exponent of pro-life movement in Kerala passed away today (16 November 2017) at 01.30 pm at Little Lourdes Hospital, Kidangoor. It was providential that she breathed her last in the hospital to which she dedicated her life, energy and talents.
Sr. Marcellius was born on 15 July 1952 and took her first profession in the Visitation Congregation (SVM) in the Knanaya Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam on 13 May 1969. Her final profession was on 13 May 1975. She got admission for MBBS in the Medical College, Kottayam in 1974. After two years’ service in Caritas Hospital, Thellakom (Kottayam), she went to Ireland for a two year Diploma course. She returned to Kerala as a professional gynecologist and started her service at Little Lourdes Hospital, Kidangoor. Through her skilful and prayerful professional career of 38 years, she assisted the birth of a lot of infants. More than 50000 babies were brought to light through her hands – both operation and natural birth assistance.
The living proofs of the professional skill of Dr. Marcellius are the couples who could beget babies after her medications. She gave treatments and assistance to a lot of sterile couples and a good number of them could become parents.
As Sr. Marcellius had a tender heart for the children, she recommended the parents to form big families and be generous enough to give more children in the family. Her religious faith and professional ethics compelled her to advise the couple to refrain from abortion. Wherever she went for classes and lectures, she fought against abortion, artificial family planning, artificial reproductive methods and techniques and artificial feedings.
Her approach to the married couples was that of a ministry and service than a duty of a professional. Therefore, all the children who were brought to the world were her children. She was thus a guide, comfort and a sister to the childless couples. She was a mother to children in all respect.
She wrote books and articles both in English and Malayalam especially for the promotion of prolife movement and family life.
